Questions about frozen USDT
Who freezes USDT and why?
Tether and Circle can block tokens at any address in their contracts. It usually happens at the request of law enforcement, because of sanctions or a link to fraud. The issuer does not disclose the reason.
Is a freeze the same as sanctions?
No. Sanctions are imposed by a government and addresses appear on official lists (OFAC and others). A freeze is made by the stablecoin issuer and can be lifted. See the Sanctions section for official lists.
Can frozen USDT be recovered?
Only through the issuer or a court. Only Tether or Circle can lift a block. If you own the address, contact their support with proof of identity and of where the funds came from.
Where does the list come from?
From the block and unblock events in the USDT and USDC contracts on chain. We take the latest event for each address, so an unblocked address is not listed.
